Sheffield Steel Roller Derby – New Intake

May 19 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

An SSRD skater, Betty, makes an interesting starfish shape, skating over to the opposing teams jammer in the hopes of stopping them getting past (or maybe just scaring them!)

Join Sheffield Steel Roller Derby for our next new skater intake.

Thank you for your interest in joining Sheffield Steel Roller Derby! Before you sign up to this event, please ensure you read all of the below information. You may also wish to visit our New Skater page on our website for more information.

If you are a woman or non-binary, are over 18, WE WANT YOU! No one is born playing roller derby, so everyone starts off as a beginner. We will teach you how to stop, turn around, skate backwards, fall safely, jump, hit, and so much more!

Some skating ability may make it easier to pick up other skills associated with roller derby however, we will have additional coaches during our first four weeks to help you nail the basics.

Our training venue, Skate Central, has public skating sessions if you want to practice before our recruitment event.

Everyone attending a new intake session must have all of the following with them on the day:

  • Quad Skates
  • Knee pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Helmet
  • Mouth guard

These things are for your safety and of those around you. You can get everything you need from skate shops like Skate Hut and Double Threat Skates. You can search UK Roller Derby Recyclables on Facebook for second hand kit. If you’re wondering about sizing, there are some handy tables on the 187 Pads site.

Anyone missing kit on the day will not be able to skate.

We have a limited amount of loan kit to offer new skaters for free including skates, helmets and pads. If you wish to hire our loan kit, please select the Hire Kit Needed ticket option when adding to basket and also add to your basket whatever loan kit you need. Stocks are limited and our recruitment events are very popular, so please book quickly to avoid disappointment.

Please note that we do not loan or provide mouthguards – you will need to buy your own. We highly recommend that you get a heat-mouldable mouthguard such as Sisu, for comfort and ease of use. Anyone without a mouthguard will not be permitted to join in the event.

  • 10:30am: new intake session opens!
  • 10:30am-11am: – attendees arrive, meet the team, get kitted up
  • 11am-11:15am: presentation from our Recruitment Team
  • 11:15am-12:30pm – skates on! Our new intake coaches will take your through the basic skating skills required for roller derby
  • 12:30pm: session ends.

Your first session is free; after that it’s £7.50 per session which you can pay with card when you arrive. After 4 weeks, if you want to stay and play with us, you can join us as a member for a monthly fee of £42 (reduced dues are available, just ask a member of the team).

Add to basket a skater ticket and any loan kit you need, making sure to select the size you will likely need.

If you are ordering loan kit, make sure you select each item of kit you need from the website and make sure you check out with all the items needed.

If your size is not shown then this means that this size is Sold Out. Choose another size, or contact ssrdrecruitment@gmail.com and we’ll see if we can help find you what you need.

I’m trans, can I join?

Of course! Trans women are women, so get your skates on!

I’m non-binary, can I join?

We are a member league of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and so our skaters are women or women-aligned. If you’re happy to skate under the moniker of ‘women’s roller derby’, we’d love to have you!

Is there an age limit?

Yes – we can only accept skaters who are over 18.

If you are under 18, you can join our junior league! Please  see https://www.facebook.com/SheffieldSteelJuniorRollers for more information.

What if I can no longer attend the event? (refund policy)

Our recruitment events are very popular and loan kit is in high demand. You may cancel your space on the new intake and receive a full refund for any loan kit you have paid for up to 7 days before the new intake event. This allows us to open up your spot or loan kit to anyone on the waiting list. Any cancellations received after the deadline will not be refunded.

I really want to join but I can’t make this event date. Can I still join?

Yes! You must still register your place on the event to secure your place and reserve your loan kit. Then please let us know at ssrdrecruitment@gmail.com and we’ll arrange for you to join within 4 weeks of the event date. If you can’t join within those 4 weeks, we’re afraid you will need to wait for our next recruitment cycle.

Is my registration/ticket transferrable?

No – each person who attends must register for themselves. If you’d like to invite a friend please forward the link. The more the merrier!

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No – please save the trees! We’ll have a list of attendees for each session.

Any other questions? Please contact ssrdrecruitment@gmail.com for more information.
